Cycling UK

Colchester Cycling UK is the local "member group" of the Cycling UK national charity that has been promoting cycling (originally as the CTC) since 1878. It runs Sunday rides at speeds of 10-12 mph which attract people of all ages and all levels of ability. The Suffolk group runs Thursday evening rides with speeds averaging 12-14mph. Call Pete Finch on 07860 263921 for information.

Cycling UK also supervises a Cycle Champions project in Colchester, which is aimed at total beginners and people returning to cycling after a long break. Email Richard Monk for details.

All Cycling UK rides start from Leisure World off Cowdray Avenue.

Cycling UK requires that you to become a member "within a reasonable time" of taking part in its activities. Membership gives you £10 million third-party insurance cover and costs less than £1 a week.

Cyclists who love racing, sportives, cross-country, time-trials or audax have a huge choice of clubs, from the giant Colchester Rovers to smaller groups such as VC Revolution, Amis Velo, VC Oyster (Mersea), and the 53-12 shop/triathlon team.

Bikes to Africa charity Re-Cycle is based in Wormingford just outside Colchester. It welcomes volunteers and is also a good place to pick up a secondhand bike.

There are bike clubs in these towns: Clacton, Witham, Mersea, Ipswich, Maldon, Braintree, Tollesbury and Chelmsford. If they don't do your type of cycling, they're likely to know others that do. There's also Forty Plus, which is active across the county.
